It covers an area of 92.73 km² (36 sq mi) and has a population of 5,642 people (2013 estimate).^[2]

The archaeological findings of the region are mainly from the Copper Age and the Roman Age. According to Ferenc Fodor, it was mentioned for the first time in 1067, in the foundation charter of the Zászty Abbey.^[3]
