Gameplay

Format

Presented with a group of "mystery singers"[lower-alpha 1] identified only by their occupation, a guest artist must attempt to eliminate bad singers from the group without ever hearing them sing, assisted by clues and a celebrity panel (also known as SING-vestigators) over the course of three rounds. At the end of the game, the last remaining mystery singer is revealed as either good or bad by means of a duet between them and one of the guest artists.

At the end of each round, the eliminated mystery singer gets a consolation prize starting with 5,000 for the first round, ₱10,000 for the second round, and ₱15,000 for the third round. If singer is good, the guest artist wins an award (as Eyeward)[4] and he/she will compete at Tawag ng Tanghalan. The winning singer, regardless of being good (SEE-nger) or bad (SEE-ntunado), wins ₱25,000.

Rounds

Visual rounds

  • Stop, Looks, and Listen
The guest artist is given some time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on their appearance. Afterward, a muted video of each mystery singer reveals only 0.3 seconds of their singing voice as an additional hint.[lower-alpha 2]
  • Two or False
Each mystery singer is given two different identities as a good and bad singer, with one of them is a real identity.[lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4][lower-alpha 5][lower-alpha 6]

Lip sync rounds

  • The Voice is Syncing
Each mystery singer performs a lip sync to a song. Good singers mime to a recording of their own performance, while bad singers mime to a recording by someone else.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3]
  • Sync Zoned
Each mystery singer performs a lip sync from a non-lyrical piece of a song (i.e. humming, screaming, whistling, etc.).[lower-alpha 2]
  • Everybody Sync!
Divided into two groups of three (or a pair of) mystery singers, each of them have to perform a lip sync of their own.[lower-alpha 4][lower-alpha 5][lower-alpha 6]

Evidence rounds

  • Clues Open
The host has randomly assigned clues about the mystery singer, and then the guest artist must choose a clue for each one.[lower-alpha 5][lower-alpha 6]
For the fourth season:[lower-alpha 1]
  • A Whole New Word — The panelist is given a statement with an assigned "keyword" to one of the remaining mystery singers of their choice. Good singers have true statements, while bad singers have their statements fabricated.

  • Good Night Silip — The guest artist is presented with a preshow rehearsal video by one of the remaining mystery singers of their choice.
  • Hula Bira and Shape, Rattle, and Roll — The panelist has to make its own premonition by one of the remaining mystery singers of their choice. Good singers have true statements, while bad singers have their statements fabricated.
  • Lights, Camera, Reaction — The guest artist is presented with a video package including witnesses reacting to one of the remaining mystery singers of their choice when they hear on its own performance that would appear on the show.
  • Stop, Spluk, and Listen — The guest artist must interrogate to one of the remaining mystery singers of their choice by audio message, but pitch-shifted to obscure their actual vocals.

Rehearsal round

  • Play it by Hear
Three random panelists are wearing headphones to listen to a recording of assigned mystery singer that lasts for 15 seconds. Afterward, the panelist defends the mystery singer and convince the guest artist to choose them as the winner.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4]

Background

Production and development

ABS-CBN Corporation formally acquired the rights to produce a local adaptation of I Can See Your Voice in the Philippines as per collaborative dealing with Endemol Shine Group in August 2017, including with production duties assigned by ABS-CBN Studios.[5][6]

Filming

Filming of the show took place at ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Quezon City.[7] During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was made under implementing health and safety protocols since from third to fourth season.[8]

Also prior to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the second broadcast shutdown,[9][10] production in the second season was halted in March 2020.[11][12]

Broadcast history

I Can See Your Voice debuted on September 16, 2017.[lower-alpha 1] A second season premiered on August 10, 2019,[16] but it was prematurely ended on March 14, 2020.[11][12] The third season made their airing debuts on Kapamilya Channel and A2Z on October 24, 2020,[17][18] coinciding the debut of then-TV5's rival show Masked Singer Pilipinas.[19][20] The fourth season premiere that initially scheduled for January 8, 2022,[21] was later moved to January 15, 2022, occupying a replay of 1MX Manila 2021.[22] A fifth season premiered on March 4, 2023,[23][24] followed by its airing debut on TV5 on March 11, 2023.[lower-alpha 2]

The program was aired on ABS-CBN for the first two seasons. Similar to the original South Korean counterpart simulcasts on Mnet and tvN, (the interim) Kapamilya Channel and A2Z also conducted the same manner (since the third season), and then TV5 (for the fifth season).[lower-alpha 2] Outside of the Philippines, it is aired on TFC through international transmissions. For digital platforms, it is available to broadcast on Kapamilya Online Live streaming via YouTube and iWantTFC through video on demand.

Special episodes and companion event

As a prelude to the show's first anniversary, a highlight special (subtitled Best Mode) was aired on September 9, 2018,[27] followed by Daniel Padilla playing on entire Kalokalike alumni as mystery singers on September 15, 2018.[28][29] It also aired the first episodes featuring an entire lineup of celebrities (with TNT Boys),[30][31] pairs (with Marcelito Pomoy),[32][33] groups (with TJ Monterde [tl] and KZ Tandingan),[34] elderly (with Doris Bigornia),[35][36] and foreigners (with Ethel Booba)[37] as mystery singers.

An in-game event I Can Guess Your Voice was conducted since from fourth to fifth season, in which viewers (acting as Home SING-vestigators) can use social media to predict the outcome of a winning mystery singer, either it was good or bad by means of a duet with one of the guest artists.[21][22]

Cast

The series has a panel of celebrities who assist the guest artist(s) to decipher mystery singers' identities throughout the game. Alongside with mainstays, guest panelists also appear since the first season. Overall, 13 different members have been assigned, with the original lineup being Wacky Kiray, Kean Cipriano, Alex Gonzaga, Andrew E., and Angeline Quinto.[2][38]

Beside them, subsequent members joining on that lineup also include Bayani Agbayani (from first season); KaladKaren (from second season);[39] Long Mejia, Negi, Nikko Natividad, Jona Viray (from third season);[40] MC Muah [tl], and Lassy [tl] (from fourth season).[41]
