Banglar Mati Banglar Jol (Bengali: বাংলার মাটি বাংলার জল, pronounced [baŋlar maʈi baŋlar dʒɔl]; "The Soil of Bengal, The Water of Bengal") is a Bengali prayer[1][2] and patriotic song written by Rabindranath Tagore and is the official state anthem of West Bengal.[3][4]

History

An ode to Mother Bengal, it was composed in 1905 in support of the "Bangabhanga Rodh Movement" (resistance movement) against the 1905 Partition of Bengal.[5][6][7][8] Tagore started "Raksha Bandhan Utsav" on 16 October 1905 to reunite Hindu and Muslim Bengalis protesting the Partition of Bengal (1905) and on that day, this song was the motto of the movement.[3][6][7][8] The notation of the song was given by Indira Debi Chowdhurani.[5]

Official adoption

On 7 September 2023, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed a resolution making Banglar Mati Banglar Jol the official state song of West Bengal.[9][10]
