Anna (transl.Elder brother) is an Indian Tamil-language television series produced by Rajammal Creations, starring Senthil Kumar and Nithya Ram in the lead roles. The serial is based on the bond between an elder brother and his 4 younger sisters. It currently airs on Zee Tamil at 20:30 IST, and is available to watch on ZEE5.[2]

Plot

The plot revolves around Shanmugan (Senthil), a loving brother who raises his four younger sisters with the utmost care, as well as his dad (as he is a drunkard). However, he is over-protective, and doesn't realise that the girls have their own dreams and aspirations in life and sees marriage as the end goal in life. On the other hand, you have Bharani (Nithya Ram) who dislikes her house due to parental pressure and disapproval of her love with Shanmugan. How Shanmugan unites with Bharani, as well as how he takes care of the four sisters is the central plot.

  • Senthil Kumar as Shanmugam: A single man who runs a grocery shop and raised up his four younger sisters Rathna, Veera, Isakki and Kani. As his mother leaves them alone, he take the responsibility and take care of the house; Bharani's husband.[3]
  • Nithya Ram as Bharani: A doctor and Shanmugam's cousin. She is dynamic and determined in her passion, SoundraPandi and Bakiyam 2nd Child, Muthupandi Younger sister and Sivabalan Elder sister; Shanmugam's wife.[4]

Development

It was announced on Monday 10 April 2023 that the series will be released on Zee Tamil.[5][6] The series will be produced by Rajammal Creations, which previously produced the Zee Tamil series Deivam Thantha Poove.[citation needed]

Casting

Senthil Kumar was cast in the main role in the serial, making his comeback to Tamil television after Naam Iruvar Namakku Iruvar.[7][8] Nithya Ram was cast in the female lead role in the serial, returning to Tamil television after Nandini nearly three years.[9][10] Initially, Rithika Tamil Selvi was chosen to play one of the sister role Isakki, but she quit later and was replaced by Preetha Suresh.[11][12]

Sunitha was cast as another sister role Rathna. VJ Thara was initially cast as Veeralakshmi, Shanmugam's second sister, but was replaced by Darsu Sundaram in end of 22 September 2023.[13][14] However, she also left[15] resulting in Gowri Gopan to play the role in April 2024.[16] Actor Santhosh was cast as Venkateshan, Rathna's love interest,[17] but he was replaced by Ajay Bharat in end of March 2024.[18]

Release

The first promo was unveiled on 15 April 2023, featuring Senthil Kumar at the Kavadi Aattam temple.[19][20]
