"For decades there have been as many different ideas about Alaska as the proverbial blind men had about the elephant." – Harold L. Ickes, 1945

"Alaska is bounded on the north by Stefanssen, on the east by perdition, on the west by Bolshevism, and on the south by applications for government jobs." – Anton Anderson, 1952

"...Alaska was largely a terra incognita; the literature pertaining to it was scanty and of dubious accuracy. In fact, so much was so misleading that it became natural and a seeming duty to put down facts and to correct the inaccuracies found everywhere in the public print." — Edward L. Keithahn, 1966
