Wanbi is on the Karoonda Highway and the Loxton railway line. Railway infrastructure was established in 1912 as part of the Barmera railway line. In 1925 Wanbi station became a junction when the Yinkanie railway line branched off there.[11] The branch was closed in 1971. In 1996, the mainline through Wanbi, en route to Loxton (later shortened to Tookayerta), was converted to standard gauge. In July 2015, that line also closed.[citation needed]
