Although it is commonly believed that the Jataka is based on the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, the Jataka and the container of it, Pali canon and atthakatha themselves predates[2] the earliest records of Valmiki's Ramayana by approximately a century at least.[3]
Other adaptations of it such as the Thai Ramakien, Lao Phra Lak Phra Ram and Burmese Yama Zatdaw are also claimed to be derived from this Jataka.[4]
